China's electric vehicle technology bottleneck into the universal problem of electric vehicles

June 26, 2023

At the inaugural meeting of the "Central American Electric Vehicle Industry Alliance", Li Rongrong, former director of the State-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission of the State Council, said that 1.3 billion yuan will be allocated this year to support the construction of a common technology platform for electric vehicles, and will continue to provide support in the coming years.

It is understood that on this list there are state-owned power grids, China Southern Power Grid, Sinopec, CNOOC, and PetroChina, among others. CNPC is entering the field of new energy vehicles for the first time.

According to industry insiders, the competition in the industrial chain of electric vehicles, batteries, and charging accessory facilities in the new energy field will become increasingly intense.

Although national planning for new energy vehicles based on electric vehicles and multiple new energy vehicles co-existed, “The Energy Saving and New Energy Automobile Industry Development Plan” has basically taken shape, but the opinions on hybrid power and pure electric vehicles are mainstream. There is no unity.

As of April this year, Toyota's global sales of hybrid vehicles have exceeded 2.5 million units. Will hybrid power become the mainstream of future cars?

Feng Xingya, deputy general manager of GAC Toyota Motor, publicly stated that in the long run, electric vehicles or hydrogen-fueled cars will become the mainstream. But how long this time is, it is not known.

In fact, the 2020 new energy vehicles, such as plug-in hybrid electric vehicles, pure electric vehicles, and hydrogen fuel cell vehicles, are listed in the “Energy Conservation and New Energy Vehicle Development Plan 2011 to 2020” led by the Ministry of Industry and Information. It will reach 5 million vehicles, and it does not distinguish between the number of possessions of pure electric vehicles and hydrogen fuel cell vehicles.

Zhang Zhiyong, the National Automobile Service Committee Automobile Advisory Committee, told reporters that in the near term, it cannot be said in general that whether pure electric vehicles or hydrogen fuel cell vehicles will become the mainstream of future automobile consumption.

Technical bottlenecks

“Electric vehicles have high requirements for batteries, motors and electrical controls. In the past, hybrid motors had problems and there were internal combustion engines that could be run again. However, the demand for pure electric motors is very high.” Tsinghua University Automotive Engineering Professor Chen Quanshi, a professor and executive director of the China Automotive Engineering Society, told the China Economic Times reporters.

Suo Rong electric car network CEO Jia Yongxuan told reporters that the ease of use is the most important factor in promoting electric vehicles. To avoid social problems caused by the use of electric vehicles, this involves the safety of power systems, such as peaks, high pressure and other infrastructure.

In addition, industry insiders pointed out that the popularization of electric vehicles requires a large number of charging infrastructure facilities similar to car parking lots. This is an integrated project.

"The quality of power devices is very important for the popularization of electric vehicles. The power devices of electric vehicles are different from those of electric bicycles. The former demand is very high." Zhou Yiyi, an application engineer at Infineon Technologies (Beijing) Co., Ltd., told reporters.

“In order to be accepted by more and more people, electric vehicles must be industrialized and achieve economies of scale, so that prices can be reduced.” Jia Yongxuan believes that in the long run, the popularity of electric vehicles is a major trend, but such as batteries, Technical issues such as power grids, motors and charging infrastructures need to be urgently broken.

In addition to some technologies, people's consumption habits of electric vehicles are also factors restricting the popularity of electric vehicles.

Jia Yongxuan said that people in China usually only consider the purchase cost of the first car, but do not consider long-term investment. This consumption habit requires a certain degree of reversal.

According to public information, in early June, China's new energy vehicle subsidy policy was formally introduced. According to the policy, the plug-in hybrid passenger vehicle has a maximum subsidy of 50,000 yuan for each vehicle, and the subsidy for pure electric passenger vehicles is 60,000 yuan per vehicle. The subsidy policy for hybrid vehicles will be included in the "Energy-saving Products Benefiting the People's Project". Will subsidize 3,000 yuan.

"What is the subsidy price of electric vehicles everywhere? How long will it take to subsidize electric cars? This is a very real issue," said Jia Yongxuan.

Industry sources pointed out that the current domestic market environment is not perfect, and the industrialization of electric vehicles will be difficult in the short term.
